A quick bedside correlation for pulse-oximetry saturation values:

The oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve is sigmoidal (S-shaped). At high saturation levels (95-100%), large drops in PaO2 cause only tiny drops in SpO2. However, below 90%, the curve becomes extremely steep, meaning small changes in oxygen levels cause dangerous, rapid desaturation.
