Wood Moisture Principles

Wood is a hygroscopic material that absorbs and releases moisture. Tangential shrinkage (parallel to growth rings) is typically twice as great as radial shrinkage (perpendicular to growth rings). Longitudinal shrinkage is usually negligible.

Lumber does not shrink or expand when moisture levels are above the Fiber Saturation Point (FSP, around 30% moisture content) because only the free water inside cell cavities is leaving. Below 30%, bound water leaves the cell walls, causing cell shrinkage.
